Peer support

You should not have to figure this out alone.

Talking with another caregiver who understands the strange mix of love, responsibility, grief, frustration and determination can be more useful than another stack of forms.

Grandparents embracing a young child

Peer support is different from professional advice, and that is part of its value

Another caregiver may not be able to solve a court order or diagnose a child's behaviour. What they can often do is understand the strange mix of love, responsibility, grief, frustration and determination that comes with raising a child when you did not expect to become the full-time parent.

What you can expect

People who understand

You should not have to begin every conversation by explaining why parenting again at this stage of life feels different.

Practical knowledge

Caregivers share questions to ask, services they have encountered, ways they organize paperwork and lessons learned navigating everyday systems.

Less isolation

Peer relationships can provide a sense that your family is not the only one living with these circumstances.

Who is this for?

The 211 listing describes the groups as support for grandparents raising grandchildren. Building GRAND-Families' broader work also recognizes great-grandparents and other kinship or alternative caregivers. If you are raising a niece, nephew, sibling or another child and are not sure whether a current group is the right fit, contact us privately and we can help identify the best starting point.

Privacy matters

Families may be dealing with addiction, child protection, court proceedings, mental health concerns or conflict with adult children. You do not need to put those details into a public social-media comment to ask for support. Use the contact form or email us directly.

Peer support does not replace crisis, legal or clinical services. If a child is unsafe, contact Child Protection. For an immediate emergency call 9-1-1. For legal questions use qualified legal information or counsel, and for urgent mental health support use the appropriate PEI health service.

Not ready for a group?

Start with a private message. Tell us only what you are comfortable sharing and what you are trying to find: another caregiver to talk with, financial information, GACP, legal navigation, school questions, trauma support or something else.
