FASD in kinship care: support the brain, the child and the caregiver.
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder can affect learning, memory, attention, communication, regulation, physical health and everyday living. Kinship caregivers may be trying to understand those needs while also navigating school, health care, parent relationships and incomplete family history.

What can FASD affect?
FASD can affect learning, memory, attention, communication, emotional regulation, motor skills, physical health and daily living. Most people with FASD do not have obvious outward physical signs, which is one reason their needs can be misunderstood.
Why FASD can be especially complicated in kinship care.
- The caregiver may not have complete prenatal, birth or developmental history.
- The child may also have experienced separation, trauma, family violence, parental substance use or repeated moves.
- School or health records may be spread across several adults or services.
- Caregivers may be blamed for behaviour they did not cause and cannot simply punish away.
- Support needs can continue into adolescence and adulthood, affecting the caregiver's own long-term planning.

Professional FASD practice guideSupport should begin with the individual's profile, not a generic FASD checklist.
CanFASD's intervention work emphasizes person-forward, strengths-based and individualized support. Useful strategies often include structure, predictable routines, environmental adaptations, concrete communication and support that matches the person's actual functioning.

Diagnosis is not based on one symptom or one test.
Canadian guidance uses a multidisciplinary assessment. If there is known or possible prenatal alcohol exposure and persistent concerns about development, learning or everyday functioning, start with the child's PEI health provider and ask what assessment pathway is appropriate.
Consequences may not teach what you expect.
If a child has difficulty with working memory, impulse control, receptive language or connecting cause and effect, repeating increasingly severe punishment may not create the missing skill. Ask what cue, support, supervision or environmental change would make success more likely next time.
School support can be essential.
Students may need individualized instruction, repetition, visual supports, sensory adaptations, predictable transitions, help with executive functioning and one trusted adult who understands the child's profile. PEI Student Well-being Teams can also be part of the support network for school-aged children and families.
Caregivers need support too.
CanFASD's ongoing CARE Study identifies caregiver wellbeing, family stability, system gaps and life transitions as important areas of concern. In a grandfamily, the caregiver may also be older, managing their own health and wondering who will support the young person later in life.

FASD information should not be used to shame a child's birth parent. Public Health Agency of Canada notes that alcohol use during pregnancy can occur in the context of an unplanned pregnancy, trauma, poverty, isolation, violence, depression or alcohol use disorder. The child's support needs can be addressed without turning diagnosis into a moral judgment.
